Ms Gloria Dean Jones

She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston and Ruth Jones; brother, Winston Jones, Jr., and sister, Ruth Eleanor Zehner. She is survived by her sisters, Darlene Carpenter (John), Buffalo, NY and Janet Sue Martin (John), Altamonte Springs, FL, ten nieces and nephews, fifteen great-nieces and nephews and a great nephew. Gloria moved to Long Island, NY from Evansville IN in 1946. After graduation from Babylon High School, she joined the US Army Air Corp, which later became the US Air Force. She was a teletype operator stationed at The Pentagon during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged after four years as a Staff Sargent. She was an electronics buyer for a number of large companies both on Long Island and in Florida. She was a member of Toastmistress/International Training in Communication (ITC) for many years serving in many capacities. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Sanlando Springs for nearly twenty years. A passion for books led her to reorganizing the church library, spending nearly five hundred volunteer hours setting up the library. She taught the Fidelis (Senior Ladies) Sunday School Class for several years. At age sixty-five, she got her HAM radio license. She was a member of LAMARS (Lake Monroe Amateur Radio Society) and part of the Florida Baptist Convention Disaster Relief team. In one year, as part of the Florida Baptist Disaster Relief team she worked the Flagler County fires when the entire county was evacuated, the devastating tornado in Oviedo and a major hurricane in Key West. Failing health resulted in her being placed at Longwood Health Care. She was a resident there for two and a half years. Some of her nicknames included Spunkmeister and Feisty Lady, she was both. A piece of chocolate or a camera would produce the biggest smiles. She loved her God and her country, and she will be missed. As Mama used to say, the “Uppertaker” will get me before the undertaker will. The Uppertaker got her on January 5, 2014. Rest in peace Feisty Lady.
