Carol Gould Mullings, was born on October 14th, 1945, the 6th of 9 children, of Mavis and George Reid. She grew up in Cornwall Mountain, in the parish of Westmoreland, in Jamaica. She always dreamed of becoming a nurse. She eventually graduating first in her class from Kingston School of Nursing, also known as KPH.
After completing her nursing degree, she emigrated to Chicago in the late 60s. In Chicago, she attended Olive Harvey Junior College, and then transferred to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) nursing school, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing. In 1975, while attending Olive Harvey College, she met and later married her husband, Arriff. Their 47-year union, produced a son, Jared and daughter, Kami. With this marriage, she also become the step-mother to Robert.
After graduation from UIC, Carol spent the next 35 years working at Wyler Children’s Hospital, at The University of Chicago. She so loved taking care of children. She spent many years working with the liver transplant patients while working in the pediatric Intensive care unit. It is on this unit, that she forged many lifelong friendships.
Carol was an avid reader who closely followed current events, often reading multiple newspapers daily. She did not discriminate regarding current events, watching everything from news programs to reality TV shows. Carol was an active member in the Jamaican community in Chicago. She was a former president of the Jamaican American Association as well as a member of the Jamaican American Association of Healthcare Professionals (JAHCAP) and the Caribbean Athletic Club, in Chicago. She was also a member of Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church in Chicago for over 20 years.
She moved to Apopka, Florida in 2004. Here she worked briefly in the Juvenile Detention Center and also worked at Florida Hospital (NOW Advent Health) until she finally retired in 2010. After moving to Apopka she became a member of North Orlando Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was active in the church choir, only stopping because of the concern for driving at night.
Other than her Lord, it was her family that brought her joy, particularly the children. She is a second mother to a host of nieces and nephews, and grandmother of four. Carol is survived by her husband, Arriff; sons: Robert (Dareen) and Jared; daughter, Kami (Jasper); granddaughters: Katherine and Sydney; grandsons: Stephan and Kingston; sisters: Laurette and Claire (Neroy); brothers: Clyde (Nalda) and Edward (Faye); and a host of family and friends.
