Arthur S. “Art” Mickelson , 75, of Apopka, FL, entered eternity on Thursday, March 19, after a lengthy illness.
Born Austin, Texas , he was a captain in the United States Air Force who served his country during the Vietnam era. He received the Bronze Star for battle planning and combat action in Operation Ivory Coast for the raid on a prisoner of war camp, Sơn Tây near Hanoi, North Vietnam in 1970.
After retiring from the military, Art continued to serve people in a variety of jobs, including district supervisor for the Florida Department of Children and Families, and as a high school math teacher. He also facilitated educational opportunities for at risk youth.Art enjoyed visiting the mountains and canning many delicious jams and jellys. He had a love of orchids and all flowers. Art liked hunting and fishing and visiting his pines in Florala. Art is survived by wife of 30 years, Marjorie Green Mickelson. Brother Roger Mickelson and wife Wanda of Columbus, GA, sister Diane Mock and husband Von of Boynton Beach, FL, nephew Neal Mock of Port Saint Lucie, FL and niece Sarah Mock of Vienna, Austria. Numerous cousins, extended family and friends.
Arthur was preceeded in death by his parents, Marion Mickelson and Myra Nell Cravey Mickelson of Florala.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. He will be buried, with military honors, at Hollywood cemetery, Richmond, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur’s name to Columbia Christian Missions, P.O. Box 95, Rittman, Ohio 44270 would be greatly appreciated.
