Mark Andrew Chernega of Apopka, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22 at the age of 71 with his family by his side.
Mark was born in Pittsburgh PA on March 14, 1950 to father Peter Chernega and mother Maudie Chernega. Mark graduated from Bishop Moore High School where he was later inducted into their Hall Of Fame for four sports; football, baseball, basketball and track. Mark also attended Orlando Junior College/Valencia Community College before going to work in the construction industry. Starting from humble beginnings on a forklift he eventually worked his way up to being the President of Florida Rock’s Central Florida Division.
Mark married the love of his life, Barbara, in 1973 and had two daughters, Sunni and Jackie whom he also loved dearly. Later in life, he was blessed with his beautiful granddaughter, Ireland. Mark was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Apopka.
Perhaps one of the most competitive people you could ever meet, Mark split his time between playing for and managing a softball team with six national titles and restoring his award winning 1965 GTO. A very proud moment for Mark, the car was eventually featured in Muscle Car Review magazine.
Mark also instilled the love of competing in his daughters and was very involved in their equestrian competitions. Always a leader, Mark served as the President of the Florida Ponies Of America Association for several years and could frequently be found behind the microphone in the announcer’s stand during their competitions. His favorite hobby of all was driving, washing and talking about his motorhome and horse trailer which he put thousands of miles on pulling his daughters’ horses all over the country to compete.
Mark had a true love for the Ready Mix industry and loved the people that he worked with. He liked to say “there are those that do and those that wait for others to do”. Mark was a doer. Mark served as the Associate Affiliate Vice President for the Associated General Contractors, on the Board of Directors for the Associated Builders and Contractors, on the Board of the Orange County Boys Ranch, on the board of the American Concrete Industry and HomeBuilders Association and was appointed by then County Commissioner, Mel Martinez to the Orange County Code Enforcement Board.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Chernega, daughters Sunni Duke and Jackie Chernega, granddaughter Ireland Grantham, brother Jeff Chernega, sisters Holly Howard and Elise Eubanks and numerous nieces and nephews.
Known as an instigator, aggravator and maybe even a rascal, Mark and his antics will be fiercely missed by his family. There will never be another like him.
To honor him, a graveside service will take place at Highland Memory Gardens in Apopka, FL at 12:30pm on Thursday, January 27th, 2022. (3329 E Semoran Blvd, Apopka, FL 32703)

Mark was one of nicest people I ever knew and a truly good friend of mine for most of my life. We met in fourth grade and stayed in touch for many years. We played sports together and occasionally against each other during our grade school and high school years. Our former football coach Harry Nelson said of Mark once “ Mark has the heart of a 200 pounder in a 135 pound body”. He starred in all aspects of athletics and the friendships he maintained for years.
I will miss his smile, his great attitude towards life and the friendship we had for over 60 years. God bless you Mark!

Barbara, I am very sorry that Mark is no longer with us. I will pray for you and your family. He helped me with our baseball field construction at Bishop Moore many years ago. He also helped put my 8 track player in my car. I also remember him for his play on the football and baseball fields at BiMo. He was skilled in many areas. He was one of those rare combinations – a good athlete and a better person. He was a good friend. Once again I am sorry for your loss.

Mark was my friend at Bishop Moore but I have not seen him in many years. I was so pleased to read of all of his interests and accomplishments over the many years since I knew him in high school. Sounds like he had many accomplishments and many moments of joy in his life. I wish he had come to our reunions to share in that joy with all of us who loved and admired him. My condolences to his family. Mark was a beautiful man and I am so sad that he is gone from all of those who loved him.

Before talented people were labeled as “rock stars”, Mark WAS one. As a classmate and teammate at BMHS, Mark was gifted athletically and socially. His grin was infectious and he was always fun to be around. God bless him and the family he left behind. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

Mark had an amazing life and more importantly, he made an impact on so many others. His antics, his competitive side, his sportsmanship and friendship are all aspects that are not lost to the past, but live on in our memories from the loud hollers of a barrel class or a late night softball game under the lights. I will be forever grateful to your family and the part you’ve played in mine. And yes, Mark definitely had an impact – he challenged me and expected that I give my very best, just as he did from your girls. Dearest Barb – I wish you & your girls strength, peace and healing at this time.
Rick Dunn says
My prayers go out to Barbara and the girls. I remember Mark as being a great competitor and teammate in football and baseball. He made us become a better team and, by example, made us become tougher individually. Mark, rest in piece, my friend.
